Happy Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had legally ended slavery in Confederate states. The delay wasn’t an accident; it reflected how slowly freedom actually reached the people it was meant to liberate, especially in places furthest from Union control. That gap between the promise of freedom and its reality is part of why Juneteenth matters so deeply: it’s a reminder that justice on paper and justice in practice are not always the same thing, and that the work of closing that gap often falls to the very people it was supposed to protect in the first place.

Juneteenth has long been celebrated within Black communities — through cookouts, music, prayer, and storytelling — as both a day of mourning what was endured and a day of joy for what was overcome. In recent years, it has gained wider recognition, becoming a federal holiday in 2021, and more people outside the Black community are learning its history for the first time. That growing awareness is a good thing, but it also comes with responsibility: to listen more than we speak, to celebrate without flattening the holiday’s deeper meaning, and to ask what we can do not just on June 19th, but throughout the year.

For me, recognizing Juneteenth is about more than acknowledging history — it’s about staying engaged with the present. That means continuing to learn, showing up for the Black community and causes that matter to them, and using whatever platform I have to amplify voices and stories that deserve to be heard. Juneteenth is a celebration, but it’s also an invitation — to reflect on how far we’ve come, and to stay honest about how far we still have to go.
